[Film Review]: Transcendence

Transcendence

What you will and will not like.

Try to close your eyes and imagine what it's like to be blind. Stay like that for 20 minutes (without trying to fall asleep that is :P) and you'll see how frustrating it is to be blind. You'll feel as if you'd give anything to see the light. Anything, to be like the rest. Anything to be better. In this film, Johnny Depp portrays a curious genius scientist who wants to give the ability to heal from any... any abnormality.
He uses biotechnology to heal anything and anyone. He revives a person who was surely going to die and also enables him to lift an 8 tonne bar. If that isn't a miracle than what is?
But I'm getting ahead of myself. However, like in every stereotyped movie, there's a protagonist and an antagonist. Here, the antagonist is an extremist group called R.I.F.T (Revolutionary Independence From Technology) believe that what Depp (Dr. William Caster) was doing would cause a "rift" in the usual balance of nature and it would disrupt the normal ecosystem. What Depp planned on doing was to create an artificial intelligence that would have more intelligence than the combined intelligence of all people born till then. When questioned as to whether Will was trying to create a God, he says, "Isn't that what we always wanted?". He is later shot by the same person who asked the question and it was found that he worked for R.I.F.T. after which he commits suicide.
Will is not affected much by the bullet as it just grazes him but it is told that the bullet was dipped in radioactive material. Due to this, Will would just live for 3 months at the best conditions.
He is then taken care of by his wife, Rebecca Hall as Evelyn Caster who also works extensively on Will's research.
Finally she succeeds and what conspires next, is the je ne sas quio of this fim, it's ending sequence.
What you'll like
1.  Portrayal of William Caster by Depp
2. The role of Morgan Freeman
3. The story
4. The ending

What you'll not like
1. The 2 dimensional nature of the characters who are not as well explained as they should've been.
2. The long prequel.
3. The repetitiveness of the ideas portrayed by R.I.F.T.
4. The betrayal of Paul Bettany

Final verdict: ***
